چکیده

Results from a Monte Carlo simulation of backscattering from one-dimensional (1-D) time-evolving sea surface models are reported. A numerical electromagnetic method based on an accelerated forward–backward approach is used to calculate backscattered returns from impedance surface profiles at incidence angles of 0 (normal), 40 , and 80 . Surfaces are initialized as realizations of a Pierson–Moskowitz spectrum and then stepped in time through a numerical hydrodynamic method. Results from three distinct hydrodynamic methods are compared: a linear evolution, the “improved linear representation” of Creamer et al. [7], and the “Watson–West” approach of West et al. in [8]. Instabilities in the West model due to formation of steep wave features limit the study to L-band backscattering for wind speeds less than 2 m/s, so that the surfaces considered are only slightly rough on an electromagnetic scale. The small slope approximation for electromagnetic scattering is shown to provide reasonable predictions in this limit. Statistics of the resulting surface profiles and backscattered fields are compared for the three models and are found to be similar in most respects. Backscattered field Doppler spectra, however, show differences, with the West model apparently capturing more nonlinear interactions in the surface evolution.

Numerical Scattering Simulations from Time-evolving Ocean-like Surfaces at L- and X-band: Doppler Analysis and Comparisons with a Composite Surface Analytical Model1

Direct numerical simulations of sea surface scattering are used to evaluate the accuracy of a recently proposed analytical model for ocean-generated Doppler spectra. Comparisons are performed for backscattering at incidence angles varying from near-nadir to low grazing at Land X-bands. Doppler centroids predicted by the model show, as expected, large discrepancies close to nadir and grazing dir...

Enhanced Predictions of Tides and Surges through Data Assimilation (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...

Numerical Studies of the Nonlinear Interaction Between Turbulent Air Flow and Sea Surface Waves, with Application to Ocean Surface Wave Turbulence

The generation of sea surface waves by winds is one of the fundamental air-sea interaction processes which affect the global climate. Although this topic has been studied extensively through both physical modeling and experimental measurements, understanding of the physics involved remains limited due to the nonlinear phenomena implicit in both air flow and sea surface wave evolution. Numerical...

Effect of Bubble/Droplet Morphology and Slippage on Attachment Induction Time in Deoiling Flotation Process

A modified model has been analytically developed to describe the induction time of an elliptic air bubble in contact with an elliptic hydrophobic oil droplet. The role of hydrophobicity was revealed in the slippage of liquid over the surfaces of bubble and droplet. In this condition, the analytical relationships for pressure distribution and consequently hydrodynamic resistance force through th...
